Gardens for Life

The Gardens for Life Phase II will start from June 2009! The project will have interesting rural urban links with schools from both urban and rural areas participating in the project. The twenty schools that participated in the gardens for Life I will be the mentor schools for this project. The four step approach to this project is simple:

1. START A GARDEN :

The activities start with identifying a place to grow a garden, decide upon what to grow – plan the garden with students’ help; then clean, weed, plough, sow seeds, plant saplings and watch them grow - using every opportunity to make these activities an enjoyable learning experience.

2. LINK ACTIVITIES TO THE CURRICULUM :

One of the important features of this program is to grow vegetables like brinjal methi, paalak, tomatoes, potatoes etc and LINK it to the existing SCIENCE curriculum. For eg weeding could be a lesson on types of Roots...It could also be related to the arts and fine arts curriculum

3. LINK ACTIVITIES TO LOCAL ISSUES :

Whether it is using chemical fertilizers or deciding whether to have Genetically Modified food - there are many issues that the farmer faces and this influences the decisions and the production - quantitatively and qualitatively. Discuss local and global issues related to farming and agriculture

4. COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS OF OTHER COUNTRIES :

Every attempt will be made to provide one-to-one link with GFL schools in the UK, Kenya, Australia, Singapore, Gambia, etc. so that students could share their gardening experiences with each other...

Although the project starts in June plans could start early and you could be ready with your patch and seedlings before the monsoons. Schools wanting to participate please register online.
